After 6 Decades, Westport-Based Geiger's Is Still Growing

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – For a business that has been around for 61 years, things are certainly changing at Westport-based Geiger's Home and Garden.

While its core business – helping homeowners to create beautiful landscapes – is still its primary objective, the way in which Geiger's is going about it is ambitious. Geiger's held a grand opening for a new nursery on Saturday, May 10. It also opened new design offices this year  in Fairfield, Westport and Greenwich.

In addition, Geiger's has hired more than 30 specialists and added 20 service vehicles to its fleet of more than 50 vehicles.

The most essential piece to the Geiger's growth is the addition of the nursery in New Canaan at 295 Frogtown Road. The building formerly housed a nursery, but Geiger's will offer a better selection, improved service and a trusted name in home and garden products.

“We wanted to get closer to our customers there and be in the neighborhood,’’ said John Geiger, a senior landscape architect and son of the business’s founder, Frank. “We want New Canaan residents to know they are truly using a local company and supporting a local company. It’s right up our alley in terms of the people and the homes we want to service.”

With the addition of the New Canaan location, Geiger's can better service clients in New Canaan and lower Fairfield County with its broad range of landscaping supplies and services.

“We try to enhance lifestyle,’’ Geiger said. “We’re a skilled group of designers and we try to provide a custom plan in terms of landscaping. We wanted to have an office and a home and garden center so clients see what they’re getting.”

Geiger said the business had been seeking to expand into New Canaan but could not find the right opportunity. “It’s not that easy to find a location where we could have a nursery and offices,’’ he said. “When the Frogtown Road site became available, it had everything we wanted. We had offices and a showplace to exhibit some of the things we use in our landscaping. Many of our products are custom ordered.”

Homeowners who are uncertain how to proceed with their landscape will benefit for the newly-added design offices. They are a critical component to Geiger's as it looks to provide one-stop shopping for homeowners who want the best appearance for their property.

“The design team looks at the entire property and looks at all aspects of the landscape,’’ Geiger said. “We look at it from an architecture and landscape perspective and try to merge the two. Our landscape architects are skilled in outdoors, pool houses, decks, swimming pools, additions and renovations.”

Many homeowners, Geiger said, fail to develop a cohesive plan for their plants and shrubs. “Many people don’t understand the science of each plant and what the long term affect is going to be,’’ he said. “Some plants that require shade are planted in full sun. Some that require sun are planted in shade. Plants that grow 10 feet tall are planted right in front of windows. Many times homeowners will go to a nursery and get all excited and plantings are randomly done. For us it’s all about composition, form, height, texture and flower. We look at what plants will work best there.”

With its New Canaan location, and its new design centers, Geiger's is looking forward to expanding its business and servicing homeowners in Fairfield County. The business already services some towns by placing complimentary plants around the town, including New Canaan and Darien.

“We feel like we cover all the bases,’’ Geiger said. “It’s one-stop shopping. We have experts in every discipline and highly skilled people. We work from New Haven to the Hudson, and we can work with homeowners with all types of budgets.”
