Owner Alice Hutchinson and her staff maintain a welcoming and helpful environment where the book enthusiast, whether giving or getting, can drive off with a sleigh-full of books.

Among select gifts, Hutchinson suggests Simpson & Vail Literary Teas. The line is a collection of blends that were created with a specific author in mind and are not available anywhere but bookstores. "From a black tea blend (for Edgar Allan Poe) to a flavored herbal blend (for Beatrix Potter), each is inspired by an author's works and life. We also have the teas paired with books by that author," she said.

Litograph Infinity Scarves, soft and versatile accessories printed with the first 30,000 words of a book on the fabric, are a unique gift. The jewelry counter is full of wonderful pieces created by local artists. The shop also carries Geeks Bearing Gifts by local artist Tom Nackid, maker of the popular “I Am The Storm” bracelet.

“One can never have enough socks," said Dumbledore. "Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn't get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books.” ― J.K. Rowling from 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'

Byrd's Books is widely know for its wide selection of new and award-winning children's books. To make them come alive, Folkmanis Puppets are available, many paired with books to encourage a child's hands on exploration. And for those who are children at heart, a large assortment of puzzles features the most complex — 1,500 pieces — and a series called “Family Puzzles” that includeS three different size pieces, great to work with the very young or the very old.

Add collectable coloring books, beautiful crystals, pocket journals, colorful bookmarks, magnets, and more, your stockings will be overflowing.

Byrd’s Books carries only new titles, with a special focus on Connecticut authors, poets, publishers and illustrators. It also features additional sections that include bestsellers, children's books, poetry, mystery, science and nature, and classics, as well as greeting cards, gifts, puzzles, and a large selection of discounted titles.

Byrd's Books is located 126 Greenwood Ave. in Bethel, across from P.T. Barnum Square. The shop is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. Parking is available behind the English Apothecary, where there is a rear entrance.
