The Heights Road store is Fairfield County’s oldest independent bookstore. It has been in operation since the 1930s and at its Darien location since 1989. Barrett closed briefly in August to rearrange its setup to better serve its customers.
“We moved everything around to give the store a more inviting, open look and to create a special area for middle readers, a growing audience for us,” says Sheila Daley, the store’s owner since 1997.
After shutting down Aug. 11, Barrett reopened for business Aug. 19. The renovations a new piece of furniture to the store and rearranged the layout for easier shopping.
“We added a lovely cherry library case that will contain a collection of modern first editions,” Daley added. “Part of the new design includes an area easily converted to accommodate author events and book club gatherings.”
To celebrate the renovations Barrett Bookstore will have a special Grand Re-Opening event Saturday during its normal business hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Every item in the store will have a 10 percent discount, and there will also be a raffle for the chance to win an advanced copy of your choice of the next year.
Barrett Bookstore is located in the Noroton Heights Shopping Center at 314 Heights Road, Darien. For more information, visit the store’s website.
