Duff, Norwalk Business Owner Team To Change Sales Tax Reporting Law

NORWALK, Conn. – Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) has credited a South Norwalk business owner with helping him successfully push for reforming how the state collects sales tax, a chnage that will positively affect small businesses across Connecticut, he said.

“Our small businesses are critical to the success of Connecticut’s economy, and it is important that we are responsive to their needs,” said Duff in a press release. “This change in the law will help local businesses and merchants manage cash flow better and provide greater certainty in the state’s sales and use tax collection. I want to thank Steven Semaya, owner of Strada 18 in SoNo, for bringing this to my attention.”

The new law pushes back the deadline for remitting monthly sales and use taxes and filing sales tax returns from the 20th day of the month to the last day of the month following the month covered by the return.

“Many small businesses operate without a large cash reserve, and changing the reporting date to the 20th of the month would have meant a major disruption to our purchase order and service schedules,” said Semaya in a press release. “Returning the sales tax reporting deadline to the end of the month will help small businesses meet their obligations without interruption. I was proud to have brought this issue to Senator Duff’s attention and I want to thank him for his willingness to listen to and advocate on behalf of small businesses.”

The law takes effect Oct. 1 and is applicable to periods ending on or after Dec. 31. Retailers that must remit the tax on a weekly or quarterly basis must continue to do so as the law or the revenue services commissioner requires.
