The Third Taxing District Power Company, TTD, completed work on a new substation on Fitch Street last month. The station, which abuts the Metro-North Railroad train tracks, will allow the company to produce its own electricity and sell it back to the grid, rather than purchasing it from Connecticut Light & Power.

The $7 million construction project took just under 33 months to finish. TTD leaders thanked the Eaton Corporation for finishing the project on time and under budget.

“Under the guidance of Joe Cristino and myself, our dedicated staff has worked long hours to successfully complete this project on-schedule and within budget,” TTD General Manager Jim Smith said in a press release.” I am proud of the team involved in every aspect of this process, and we’re proud that Fitch Street is now energized for our community and customers.”

The new station is expected to save money and bring in revenue for the Third Taxing District. At the station’s groundbreaking last July, Smith estimated that the difference would be $500,000 --$250,000 in savings, and $250,000 in revenue from selling off excess power.

The opening of the Fitch Street station also helps residents in the area in times of wide-spread outages, when other companies have to manage a larger grid.

"The only way we'll lose power is if the grid goes down, and if that happens then all the power companies tied into the grid will go down, too," Smith told The Daily Voice back in July.
