New Rochelle Drops a 6-3 Verdict to the Eagles

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Ian Palfrey had outstanding scoring opportunities early in the second period, but was frustrated thanks to New Rochelle goalie Greg Feliu. The Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville forward had two breakaways from the New Rochelle blue line in, only to have Feliu make two excellent saves. Palfrey kept peppering the net with shots with Feliu making the saves. This would change as Palfrey completed a hat trick in the second period of a 6-3 win over New Rochelle in a Section 1 hockey game between Division I teams at the Ice Hutch Tuesday. The Eagles won their third consecutive game and fourth in their last five, going to 11-3 on the season. Palfrey also had an assist. Defenseman Frank Sherding added a goal and two assists and Chris Hagen recorded three assists. “I was getting frustrated, but I give credit to him,” said Palfrey, a Bronxville senior. “He is a really good goalie. I just told myself not to force it and the goals would come.” Palfrey opened the scoring 15 seconds into the second with a power-play goal, doubling the Eagles’ lead to 2-0. However, 90 seconds later, Chris Ramondelli halved the lead with a goal, converting a feed from Brett Barry. After that goal, Palfrey began flying all over the ice. On his two breakaways, Palfrey received outstanding passes from his defensemen. The lightning-quick center accelerated through the neutral zone and split New Rochelle’s defense. “We knew after they scored we would have to step right back up,” said Palfrey, who now has 23 goals this season. “We did that and got three quick ones.” Palfrey scored at 8:47, a power-play goal, and 11:40. On both goals he was assisted by Sherding and Hagen. Matt Power increased the lead to 5-1 with 42 seconds remaining in the period. Palfrey was impressed with the play of the team’s third line -- Nico Foley, Peter Donahue and Conor Incledon. “This was the first game, all year, that we ran three lines and that helped keep our legs fresh,” Palfrey said. “The third line really stepped up huge for us. I think we had more depth than them today. This was a big win for us because New Rochelle is considered the third best Division I team.” Ramondelli finished with two goals for New Rochelle and Barry had two assists.
