Award-Winning Authors Offer Free Readings At Tarrywile, WestConn In Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. — Housatonic Book Award winners Leslie Jamison and Tawni Waters are among the notable writers who will read from their work during the Western Connecticut State University Master of Fine Arts in Creative and Professional Writing summer residency in Danbury in August.

The schedule of free public readings is as follows: 

  • Tuesday, Aug. 2: Waters, winner of the 2015 Housatonic Book Award for her work of young adult fiction, “Beauty of the Broken,” will read at 7 p.m. in Room 218 of the Classroom Building on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. She will answer questions and sign books after the reading. 
  • Wednesday, Aug. 3: M.F.A. alumni Jessica McCadden and Brian Thiem will read from their recent thesis books at 7 p.m. at Tarrywile Mansion, 70 Southern Blvd. in Danbury. 
  • Thursday, Aug. 4: M.F.A. mentor and WCSU Professor of Writing, Linguistics and the Creative Process Dr. Edward Hagan will read from his recent memoir, “To Vietnam in Vain,” and M.F.A. alumnus Brian Lance will read from his thesis novel at 7 p.m. at Tarrywile Mansion. 
  • Friday, Aug. 5: Jamison, winner of the 2015 Housatonic Book Award for Nonfiction, will read from “The Empathy Exams,” answer questions and sign books at 7 p.m. in Room 218 of the WCSU Westside Classroom Building. 
  • Saturday, Aug. 6: M.F.A. alumni and mentors Jane Cleland and Scott McNeight will read from their recently published work in Room 218 of the WCSU Westside Classroom Building. 

Following the reading, all M.F.A. alumni who have published books will be acknowledged at a reception and book signing. The readings offer the Danbury community an opportunity to hear fiction, nonfiction, screenplay and poetry readings by nationally renowned authors, many of whom serve as writers in residence or writing mentors of the university’s M.F.A. in Professional Writing program. 

Launched in 2005, the program enables participants from across the nation to continue working while pursuing M.F.A. studies in a diverse range of creative and nonfiction writing genres through distance learning.
