CORTLANDT, N.Y. Free outdoor movies will make their Cortlandt debut Friday as the Cortlandt Engine Company and the town of Cortlandt sponsors the first of two G-rated outdoor films.
"It's a great location as long as the weather cooperates," said Cortlandt Recreation Director John Palmiotto.
"Gnomeo and Juliet" is scheduled to begin about 8:30 p.m. rain or shine, at the Cortlandt Engine Company lot, 2143 Albany Post Road, Montrose. Popcorn will be provided by the town, and concessions will be sold by the fire company. In case of rain, the movie will be held inside the firehouse.
"Charlotte's Web" will be shown Friday, Aug. 17, at the same time and location. "Puss in Boots" will be shown at Charles Cook Park on Aug. 2. Families are encouraged to bring chairs or a blanket.
The idea to use the lot for outdoor movies percolated out the Montrose Enhancement Plan, a committee of business owners and residents looking to improve the hamlet. The town has held outdoor movies at the Charles Cook Park, in the area surrounding Charles Cook Pool, for about the past four years.
The outdoor movies represent a cooperative effort between the Cortlandt Engine Company and the town of Cortlandt, which have two separate boards and are independent of one another, although the town contracts for services with the fire department.
Each movie showing costs the town about $1,000 for the projection company, and about $300 for the rights to each movie.
