Ringwood Supporter Plans Night To Remember

RINGWOOD, N.J. — Ringwood's Erika Mathews wanted to give a local high school senior a night to remember with her own prom dress as she goes through a difficult stage.

Mathews started a fundraiser to help a Lakeland High School senior buy her own prom dress. The senior has no family and has been living in a homeless shelter, Mathews said.

"I always asked her if she needed anything and she said no," Mathews said. "So I asked her if there's anything that she wants, and she said she'd like to go to prom."

Mathews said she had a lot of offers to donate used dresses, but she wanted the Lakeland senior to choose her own.

"She's a beautiful girl and she deserves to pick out her own dress," Mathews said.

Mathews raised more than $1,400 for the student, but said not all will go to a dress. The rest will go to related prom expenses like a limo and weekend away, and her car expenses so she can get to her job as a waitress.

"It's a rite of passage and it's something I want her to be able to enjoy," Mathews said. "... I think she's more deserving than anyone I know of this."
