New Rochelle Children Keep Busy Until School

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Layan Leone already knows what her two sons, Michael and Matthew, will be doing now that the Boys and Girls Club summer camp has concluded until next year.

“(Their father) has them next week,” Leone said. “He’s going to be doing a lot. He’ll sort it out.”

The boys will then be under the care of other family members until a family vacation to North Carolina right before the start of school.

“It’s the only time in our family where everybody has off,” said Leone.

While trying to fill up the days between summer camp and school might worry some, club staff looks at the scenario as a positive.

“It’s a great opportunity for parents to spend time with their kids,” said Joe Renda, a summer program counselor.

The same is true for New Rochelle parent Jeff Glannon, who spends the day with his two children while his wife takes care of her day to day activities.

The three have a pass to the American Museum of Natural History, along with a Wildlife Conservation Society membership, which allows them to visit the Bronx, Central Park, Queens and Prospect Park zoos.

“There’s so many activities for people to do in a city this size, it’s fabulous,” said Glannon.

Glannon never attended summer camp when he was younger and doesn't plan to put his two children on the same track.

“It’s expensive,” he said.

Parents have other options to keep their children occupied in the old-fashioned summer fun program at the Huguenot Children’s Library, which runs until Aug. 26.

New Rochelle Public Schools open Sept. 6.
