Keeping Cool When the Heat Rises in Greenburgh

GREENBURGH, NY – Vivian Ayala read the Bingo ball numbers aloud in a cool, shade-drawn area at the Theodore D. Young Community Center. Several senior residents gathered, seated throughout the quiet room, anticipating the next Bingo call and chatting among each other.

With the summer heat blazing away, reaching nearly 95 degrees this past week, Greenburgh instituted cooling centers for residents without air conditioning to stay refreshed.

"It was brutally hot on Tuesday," said George Coniglio, director of TDYCC's senior citizen department. "We've had a few seniors come in and stay."

The Community Center's cooling station is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the first floor, providing residents with cold water, a TV, tables and chairs, as well as a cool, quiet, friendly and casual place to stay during the summer.

"It's popular," said Kirsten Inlaw, a Community Center staff member. "Anyone can come in to play bingo and [get out of the heat]."

Some residents are hesitant to admit that they do not have air conditioning, said Coniglio, but the Community Center encourages residents to take advantage of their cooling station. They also advise drinking plenty of water to keep hydrated and to stay in the shade or indoors while limiting strenuous activity.
