On Saturday, December 1, 2012, the Wilton Congregational Church (WCC) Board of Missions and Service will be participating in The Big Day of Serving in Keansburg, NJ. This faith based organization has organized countless volunteer youth and adult Mission trips all over the US and abroad. We are asking any and all who are able to volunteer on that day to assist our brothers and sisters in New Jersey who lost so much in Hurricane Sandy. The best part is that the age qualification is 12 and up, so families can be a part of this important volunteer effort!
The cost is $20 per person, and this goes to supplies provided along with a lunch for all volunteers. A free bus will be available if you prefer not to drive from Wilton to Keansburg. It will leave WCC at 5:30 am to arrive in time to start work at 8:00 am. Some work could involve ripping out sheetrock, insulation and flooring that was destroyed by flood waters from Hurricane Sandy that devastated the coast of New Jersey. Therefore, you should wear clothes that you would not expect to be keeping! The weather is ever changing and could be cold, with several of the houses still without power. So make sure you bundle up. While they do provide some of the work materials, it is our recommendation that each participant bring a bucket filled with some of the most needed items to be left at the site for others to utilize. A list of suggested supplies and donations is at the bottom of this article.
Travel time to Keansburg, NJ is just under 2 hours, and they request all volunteers arrive by 7:30 am. So wheels up from WCC at 5:30 am or join others who will take the bus to Keansburg! Starbucks here we come! The workday begins around 8:00 am, with a break for lunch at noon. There is a voluntary youth service held around 4:00 pm.
Many of us have wondered how we can assist without simply writing a check. While this is most welcome, the opportunity to provide true “hands on” work directly where it is most needed, is what WCC is all about.
So tell your friends, neighbors, relatives, etc. to come out and have a great day of volunteering! For more information about this event please call Kevin Murray at 203-243-4277.
