Weighing in on New Year's Resolutions

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Now that we have finished making a list of gifts to buy, food to prepare and last minute things we forgot to pick up the last two times we were at the store, it is time for the mother of all lists -- the list of New Year's resolutions.

While some people have lofty goals like growing their own food, and contributing to the efforts to create world peace and put an end to hunger at home and far away, most of us would be happy to lose a few pounds.

Fresh off of his run for a seat on the Eastchester Board of Fire Commissioners, longtime Eastchester resident David Levy said his goal for the new year is to get the word out to vote for Libertarian presidential candidate Ron Paul.

"I want my vote to count for something," Levy said. " I am for less government and that is what Ron Paul stands for."

Angie Whelan of Yonkers has a far less lofty goal. "I am so addicted to Red Bull," Whelan said. "I have to give it up for sure this year."

Laura Lynch vowed to play the flute more in the new year. "I spent a long time learning how to do it and I just never practice," she said.

But it was Chloe Gresham who had the top resolution in our informal survey. "My resolution is to have no resolutions," Gresham said. "I think we should make a weekly resolution to do our best, not a yearly one."

Maria Oliveira of Yonkers does not put too much stock in resolutions either.

"I used to vow to give up smoking every year, but I never followed through, so now I don't make any resolutions," Oliveira said. "Now I just try to survive from one year to the next. That's my resolution."

Karen Taylor said the stress of coming off the holiday season is enough to deal with.

"My philosophy is that life is already stressful," Taylor said. "I don't plan on putting any more pressure on myself with a New Year's resolution."
