Top 2011 Headlines: Wrong Way Crash Kills Three

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The Daily White Plains is reflecting on the news stories that mattered most this year. Here's a look at how the top 10 headlines of 2011 continue to affect White Plains residents:

A freak Halloween snowstorm shocked White Plains when police announced what appeared to be a wrong-way crash that claimed the lives of three Bronx residents and injured two others driving on Mamaroneck Avenue:

Public Safety Commissioner David Chong said the department investigated the accident "as a real tragic accident with operator error in driving on the wrong side of the street as the suspected cause."

Police believe the Toyota was traveling south along the northbound Mamaroneck Ave. lane before it struck the Lexus. Police had shut the southbound lanes of Mamaroneck Ave. between Ridgeway and Rosedale Ave. on Oct. 31 because the snow had dragged down nearby wires and trees.

Police arrived at 1211 Mamaroneck Ave. at approximately 11:18 p.m. where they began removing four passengers from a 1991 Toyota Camry that crashed head-on into a 1998 Lexus.

Herbet Royster, 65, Aida Royster, 70, and David Guerra, 51, were declared dead once they arrived at the White Plains Hospital. Two others involved in the accident were treated for injuries.

Hurricane Irene dulled into a tropical storm before roaring through White Plains, leaving thousands without power, tree limbs littered across roads, and a dozen families flooded out of their Cloverdale Ave. homes. The neighborhood accused White Plains and Westchester of bickering over whose job it was to maintain the sewage system, which residents said flooded their homes during Irene.

Cloverdale Avenue was seeking legal advice against both municipalities: White Plains Department of Public Works Commissioner Joseph Nicoletti said public works employees cleaned the water drainage system in Cloverdale Ave. right before the storm. The commissioner said he hadn't heard about sewage water flooding homes there, but that if that was the case, an illegal trap must have leaked sewage water into the separate piping system used for water.
