Port Chester Almanac: Recreation Department

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - The Port Chester Recreation Department promotes recreational, cultural and play opportunities for all village residents and develops and maintains Port Chester's parks and nature areas. The village has recently installed new playgrounds at Edgewood, Recreation, John Lyon, and Columbus Parks. Columbus Park also has new basketball and volleyball courts and a picnic shelter. Several new recreation programs have been added, including a new free playground program at Columbus Park, and after school instructional programs, such as "Hands on Clay", "Start Smart", floor hockey, basketball, and tennis.

The newly organized Port Chester Youth Baseball League runs all youth baseball programs for ages 7-17, including T-Ball, midget baseball, youth baseball (Little League) and the Summer Baseball League (914-937-2237 for info). Soccer programs include a Saturday recreation league, which also involves participation in a fall and spring traveling league. A six-week day camp program, featuring swimming at least twice a week, arts and crafts, USTA tennis, a computer program for younger campers and trips to Yankee Stadium, Rye Playland and other attractions, is held each summer at Park Avenue School for children in grades 1-6.

Other youth activities include Frozen Ropes Fall Ball Leagues, martial arts, basketball for children grades 3- 5), Drop-in Basketball (young men, ages 13-22), floor hockey (Grades 1-2), girls' softball (grades 3-6, includes Rye Brook residents), ice skating (grades 1-8, includes Rye Brook residents). Adult classes include Yoga (with Rye Brook), and Total Body workouts held at the A.J. Posillipo Center. A Seniors Nutrition Program is offered at Crawford Park, North Ridge St. in Rye Brook from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday (914-939- 4975). Programs for individuals with disabilities include year round therapeutic recreation programs from the South East Consortium for Special Services, and Special Recreation on alternate Saturdays during the school year and a summer camp, sponsored by the Port Chester/Rye Brook Association of Retarded Citizens.
