LEWISBORO, N.Y. Hurricane Irene has arrived, but area residents are ready. Throngs of shoppers descended upon local supermarkets and hardware stores Saturday afternoon to stock up on enough bottled water, batteries and non-perishable food to get them through the crisis.
The non-refrigerated milk is going; the water is going, and the batteries are going, said Naser Nikocevic, manager of DeCicco Family Market in the Cross River Plaza. People are looking for candles and flashlights. We had a shipment of D batteries that came in this morning and they were all gone by 10 a.m.
Nikocevic said water was a big concern among Saturdays shopper but noted that the store had plenty on hand.
Meanwhile, shoppers endured long lines with smiles and good humor. Some were optimistic that the storm would only be a mild inconvenience.
I am just trying to have fun, said Bob Goldberg, a Cross River resident. I have a friend and my daughter coming to visit this weekend and were are just going to settle down and enjoy ourselves. I dont think were going to get hit as bad as everyone says. But I am surprised the store is open.
Goldberg said he wasnt worried about losing power while his guests were visiting.
Ive got a grill, he said.
One shopper, who didnt want to be identified, scampered out of the store with just three six-packs of beer in his cart.
My wife came this morning to do all the shopping, but she forgot the most important thing, he said with a laugh, pointing to his brew.
Janine Selendy came down from North Salem to stock up and be ready for Irene.
We got a bunch of groceries in anticipation of the storm, she said as she headed for the parking lot. Now, we are off to the hardware store to get some batteries. Its much better to be prepared in case the worse happens.
Selendy may have been out of luck if she went to Lewisboro Hardware, located in the Cross River Plaza next to DeCiccos. It was running out of hurricane supplies.
Everything is more or less gone, said employee Richie Yacovell. Things like batteries and flashlights we are just about out of.
