New Canaan Official Endorses Corbet for Treasurer

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The following letter was written by New Canaan Board of Finance member Charles Van Vleet.

I have had the pleasure to know Kathleen Corbet for over 20 years.  Kathleen and I have had overlapping careers, children of the same age and a committed interest in building a better New Canaan. I am an enthusiastic supporter of her candidacy for Treasurer, Town of New Canaan.

The position of town treasurer deserves a set of fresh eyes. Over the last 40 years, the complexities of our town finances have grown in size and scope. Just 10 years ago we had a townwide grand list of $3.8 billion, budget of $72 million and debt service obligation of $8 million. Today those same numbers are $8.2 billion, $121 million and $14 million.

Growth requires change. The town treasurer is more than a “signatory position” – it is an integral part of the operating infrastructure. With all due respect, it is not that the position has been poorly performed in the past; it is simply time for a fresh approach and a town treasurer willing to serve an active – not honorary – role

The town treasurer needs to maintain a record of cash receipts and disbursements, including documentation of purpose and authorization. This information must always be open to the inspection of any taxpayer and be presented annually in a town meeting. The town treasurer also serves as the ex officio treasurer of the operating cash balances, trust accounts and pension funds. In addition, all Town bond issues require the town treasurer’s signature.

With 30 years of corporate finance experience and recent appointment to the New Canaan Board of Finance, I have a unique perspective on what is needed, and Kathleen’s solid credentials to fill that need. She is wholly qualified to work independently – yet collaboratively – with New Canaan's Chief Financial Officer, Budget Director, Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance and Town Council. She is well-known, and well-liked throughout these offices.

Kathleen’s campaign motto Accountability, Responsibility and Transparency accurately sum up all of her personal and professional directives. She has my vote. I encourage you to consider the same.
