Darien Releases Rules for Shuffle Referendum

DARIEN, Conn. – The people of Darien will come to a final decision Tuesday on the long-debated shuffle project. Voting in the townwide referendum will take place at the normal district polling places from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The shuffle calls for moving the Senior Center to Town Hall and the Board of Education offices to the old library at 35 Leroy Ave. Voters will be asked to vote either yes or no to allocate $6.97 million for the project.

In a statement, First Selectman Jayme Stevenson reminded residents that schools will be in session while voting takes place. She asked that voters use extra care when driving in and around school polling places as traffic is particularly high during arrival and dismissal times.

District 1 votes at Ox Ridge Elementary and District 3 votes at Holmes Elementary. Both have an arrival time of 9 a.m. and dismissal at 3:30 p.m. District 4 votes at Hindley and District 6 votes at Tokeneke, both of which have an arrival time of 8:25 a.m. and dismissal at 2:55 p.m. District 5 votes at Darien High School, which has a 7:40 a.m. arrival time and 2:20 p.m. dismissal.

Darien police officers will be present at each school to ensure student safety. Parking is limited at the schools when they are in session.

Stevenson asked that voters enter the schools only as directed and exit promptly after voting.

All residential property owners are eligible to vote in the referendum. Residential property owners who are not registered voters must cast their ballot at Town Hall, where they will be asked to fill out an affidavit claiming residency. You must be a U.S. citizen to vote even if you are a residential property owner in Darien.
