Man Arrested in Connection With Westport Burglary

WESTPORT, Conn. – A 24-year-old Westport man was arrested early Thursday morning following a brief foot chase. He faces charges in connection with one of several residential burglaries recently reported in the area of Burritts Landing, police said.

Jamal Washington, whose address was not given, was nabbed by Westport police in Fairfield following an investigation that began when a "suspicious" female was spotted walking along Burritts Landing around 1 a.m., Capt. John Calka said.

The woman, 20-year-old Lauren Yaeger of Stamford, parked her car on Judy Point Lane and was accompanied on foot by Washington, Calka said. She was spotted by an officer patrolling the area and arrested following further investigation. Later, a man matching Washington's description was spotted running in the area.

Together with state and Norwalk police, Westport officers set up a perimeter in the area where Washington had been seen, Calka said. A K-9 unit from the Trumbull Police Department also responded to the scene.

Detectives later learned that Washington had taken a taxi to the area of 3900 Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield. Officers set up surveillance there with help from Fairfield police. When Washington arrived in the taxi, he was approached by Westport officers. Washington ran from the officers and a brief foot chase followed.

Calka said further investigation indicated Washington's involvement in one of the burglaries in the Burritts Landing area. He was charged with second-degree burglary, third-degree criminal trespass, interfering with an officer and criminal violation of a protective order. He was being held on a $60,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 29.

Yaeger was charged with interfering with an officer and third-degree criminal trespass. She was being held on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 3.

Since Dec. 10, four burglaries have been reported in the area of Burritts Landing: three on Burritts Landing itself and one on nearby Judy Point Lane. A fifth burglary was reported Dec. 14 on Imperial Avenue.
