POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – The Pound Ridge Library has announced its winter/spring readings for its Around the World Book Group.

The Around the World Book Group was founded five years ago at the request of a local Fox Lane graduate who felt the library didn't have enough reading programs for young adults.

"She said there were plenty for the teens and kids, but nothing for people in their 20s and 30s," said Library Director Marilyn Tinter. "It was her idea to focus on cultures from around the world."

The books are picked based on where their plots take place, not necessarily where the author is from, although, Tinter says, sometimes they're the same.

"I pick the books based on my own knowledge, but I look for feedback from the group," she said.

The selections for the first half of 2012 include:

Jan. 24: “The Line of Beauty” by Alan Hollinghusrt (England)

Feb. 28: “The Land of Green Plums” by Herta Muller (Romania)

March 20: “The Touch” by Colleen McCullough (Australia)

April 24: “Sarah’s Key” by Tatiana de Rosnay (France)

May 22: “The Tiger’s Wife” by Tea Obreht (Balkans)

June 19: “The Invisible Bridge” by Julie Orringer (Hungary)

"It's fun because you get to focus on the different cultures, which makes it a little more interesting and a little more challenging than a regular book group," Tinter said.

The group meets on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. and registration is required. Call the library at 914-764-5085 or visit its website.
