Westport Celebrates Staples Field Lights Project

WESTPORT, Conn. – With shovels in hand, town and school officials kicked off the Staples High School permanent field lighting project , which took over 30 years to become a reality. The occasion was celebrated with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony Friday, and included members of the Staples High School football team.

The installation of permanent field lights will bring to town Friday night football games, and will allow later and safer practices during the winter. The lights will be used from September through December until 8 p.m. for weekday games and practices, and until 10 p.m. for a total of eight athletic special events.

Construction is slated to begin mid-July. The purchase and installation of the lights will be paid for through private donations, raised by the Staples Stadium Fundraising Committee. The committee is also raising funds to build a new concession stand for Staples Stadium.
