The U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate both approved a plan by President Barack Obama to send weapons and training to the Free Syrian Army and other rebels to fight ISIS. The plan was opposed by many Democrats, including Debicella's opponent in this year's election, Democratic incumbent Jim Himes.

"I actually support the president and would have voted yes, because I actually believe the president has hit the right balance here," Debicella said. "We do not want to send troops back into Iraq, I don’t think anyone can say Iraq, in retrospect, was a good idea, that it was a success. But now we have this terrorist organization that is not only threatening Syria and Iraq but is starting to say it’s going to be basically what Afghanistan was, it’s going to be a base for terrorism. So we can’t allow that to happen."

Debicella said that sending American troops to fight ISIS would have been the wrong step, but that sending air support and aid to rebels fighting is the right move.

"We can’t bury our head in the sand. I know that America is very sick of the Middle East, very sick of this conflict, but there are terrorists out there who want to hurt Americans, as ISIS has very clearly proven they do with these beheadings. We need to take action," he said.

Debicella acknowledged that it seems rare for a Republican to support Obama in this political climate.

"We have to be willing to say when the other side is right and has a good idea. That’s what we’re lacking in our political discourse right now," he said."
