Stamford Mayor Tells Residents To Stay Put

STAMFORD, Conn. — Residents should stay put because of the continuing high winds from Tropical Storm Irene, Mayor Michael Pavia says Sunday afternoon.

“While the hurricane has essentially passed, because the threat of high winds remains possible, there are many streets that have downed trees and wires, I request that all nonessential, nonemergency vehicles and pedestrians remain off city streets, unless travel is completely necessary,” Pavia said. All downed wires should be considered live and hazardous, he said.

Nearly 55 percent of Stamford residents — more than 29,000 customers — were without electricity as Connecticut Light & Power works to clear downed lines. “I have requested regular status updates on the progress of power restoration until all of our residents are back on line,” said Pavia.

Beginning at 4 p.m. the curfew on Stamford has been lifted. The shelter at Stamford High School will remain open until further notice.
