Darien Rower Wins Gold at Masters Regatta

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien rower Klaas ten Broeke, who competes out of the Norwalk River Rowing Association, and his fellow oarsmen became world champions in the World Masters Rowing Regatta held in Poznan, Poland, earlier this fall. They won a gold medal in the Men’s 8 crew in the 80 years plus category. The regatta featured rowers from the U.S., the Netherlands, Norway and Poland.

Klaas began his rowing career in 1949 at the University of Delft in the Netherlands and has continued his passion for rowing with the Norwalk River Rowing Association. Darien residents Dr. Phil Negus and Don Loomis, also members of the NRRA, competed in the World Masters Regatta in Poland as well. Klaas and his teammate Bill Hawkey of Ossining, N.Y., row three times a week in Norwalk.
