He and the entire Connecticut congressional delegation met the team of cyclists at the end of their 400-mile ride from Newtown to the Capitol in Washington in April.
The cyclists rode to support common-sense legislation to prevent gun violence. The team's name refers to the 20 first-graders and six educators killed in the Sandy Hook School shootings in 2012.
A film of this year’s journey is showing at the Ridgefield Playhouse on June 30 at 7 p.m. It will be followed by "91%: A Film About Guns in America." Proceeds from ticket sales will support the next ride of Team 26. The Team 26 film was made by Newtown-based filmmaker Sue Roman.
“They rode through nasty weather, over 100 miles a day, and met with victims of gun violence and advocates of change all along the route. It is inspiring how they bring people together to take on this difficult issue,” said Roman.
"91%: A Film About Guns in America" will follow. The number 91% refers to the 2013 poll that revealed that in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, 91% of Americans support comprehensive background checks on gun sales.
The film shows how Americans almost unanimously support both Second Amendment rights and common sense regulation. The film finds a shared language between citizens on both sides of the issue, encouraging them to move common- sense policy forward by speaking up in a conversation typically dominated by firearm lobbyists and manufacturers.
Following the films there will be a Q&A moderated by Team 26 leader Monte Frank. Frank said these films demonstrate “that Americans of all races, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds are demanding action from our legislators.”
