Ziggy Marley Tunes In to Family

Ziggy Marley is the center of an ever-expanding family circle. In addition to his many talented relatives, he relates to people the world over, through his music and his charitable work, as if he is bound to them by close family ties.

His family of origin includes his father, the late legendary reggae musician Bob Marley. In the 1980s, Ziggy formed a performing group, The Melody Makers, with three of his siblings, and won three Grammy Awards. In 2003 he went solo, winning his fourth Grammy for his 2006 album, "Love Is ?My Religion." Next up was his 2009 album "Family Time." Dropping in for guest appearances on its family-focused songs are his mother, sister and daughter -- and Jamie Lee Curtis. He talked to website BC Music about the album. "I was inspired by little things here and there in the world of children, especially music entertainment. I thought I had something to say that children might find uplifting and positive and inspiring. So I wanted to say to the children: 'Family – that's what life is all about.'" Some proceeds from the album support a school Marley adopted in his native Jamaica. His charitable organization, Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment (URGE), also provides goods and programs for impoverished Jamaican kids.

Family is his heartbeat but Marley's commitment and generosity are powered by his music. As he told BC Music, "Music is the language we speak and it's global. It spreads wide and it can go wide to many places." One of them is Ridgefield Playhouse on September 10, when Ziggy Marley sings about fellowship and, of course, family. His performance begins at 8 p.m. Catch it and feel the embrace of kinship. Tickets are $67.50. For more information, visit Ridgefield Playhouse's ?website.
