WILTON, Conn. — The fitness room at the Comstock Community Center in Wilton is enjoying a steady stream of regulars after opening about a year ago, says Steve Pierce, Wilton Parks and Recreation Director.
He attributes that to convenience, especially for anyone who comes to the building regularly, whether it's to drop off kids or play pickleball — there's a court in the building.
The town's senior center is also in Comstock so members also make good use of the exercise equipment, said Pierce.
"So far there's been a very good response. Having it in the building is good for everyone. It incorporates everything that people do in one place," he said. "This is the town's base for social services offices, where seniors play pickleball, basketball, other sports, after-school meetings."
The fitness room is well-stocked, too.
"We have a treadmill, bikes, free weights," he said. "We opened in response to people asking for a place to work out."
Pierce sees parents drop children off for basketball then go into the fitness room instead of leaving — and he applauds that effort.
"Any time you can get out and exercise is a good thing. Now everybody has a place here," Pierce said.
"We get a cross section of people. Some come pretty regularly. I look at people at the side of the road running outside, getting exercise and think that's great," Pierce said.
