Wilton Farmers Market Vendors Hope For More Visitors

WILTON, Conn. – Kimberly Stranz enjoyed selling vegetables at the Wilton Farmers Market this year. She said she would like it even more if the market saw more traffic.

Stranz, one of the vendors at the Schulze Farm in Hamden, appreciates the visitors who came to the market, held for four hours every Wednesday outside the Wilton Historical Society at 224 Danbury Road. The number of visitors, however, was a little disappointing for Stranz.

“The people who come are very loyal, which is nice,” she said. “But we’d like to see a lot more of them.”

Vendor Maria Munoz del Castillo of Casa Du Soleil felt the same way. “I wish more people in Wilton came out,” she said. “There are people who don’t know about us.”

This was the second year the farmers market was held at the historical society; previous editions were held outside of Wilton Library. Twelve vendors signed up to take part in this year’s session. Some vendors said they felt the event could be promoted more to get more customers to stop by.

The Wilton Chamber of Commerce and the Historical Society did “a great deal of marketing” for the farmer’s market, including announcements in local newspapers, the chamber and Wilton YMCA newsletters, Chamber Executive Director Janeen Leppert said.

“We are always open to suggestions by our vendors on how to gain more publicity for the market,” Leppert said. “At the close of each season, each vendor receives a questionnaire asking for their feedback and we will do the same this year.  I hope everyone will let us know how we can improve on all aspects of the market for next season.”

The historical society has done a great job hosting the market, Leppert said. It’s a better location than the library because it’s on grass, which is cooler than the blacktop of the library’s parking lot, she said.
