WILTON, Conn. For the co-owners of Wiltons newest coffee shop, the Coffee Barn , it is a dream come true.
The aunt and niece team Karen Piazza, 47, and Kayla McArdle, 25, started working on the concept last winter. Less than a year later, the coffee shop is up and running.
I had been looking for a place to open a shop in Cross River," N.Y., but couldnt find a spot, Piazza said. When McArdles father bought a lot for his company, ECS Transportation, it included the barn on Danbury Road. He told his sister, Piazza, that the barn might be a good place for a coffee shop.
It wasnt until August that they started construction work at the coffee shop. The whole building had to be redone, but we wanted to keep the old beams. It keeps the character of the building, McArdle said, adding that the barn was built in the 1760s.
Keeping that character was important to them. McArdle said they kind of just ran with the barn theme, and thats visible in the exposed beams, natural wood and pictures of cows on the walls.
As a way to keep with their theme, they use local vendors, buying mainly from Connecticut and New York vendors. Their coffee for instance, is from Coffee Labs Roasters in Tarrytown, N.Y. They get cupcakes and cookies from Bake to a T in Hamden, and candies from Divvies in South Salem, N.Y.
Each brings something unique to the business, McArdle graduated with a degree in small business management, and Piazza simply loves coffee. And we have excellent coffee, McArdle said.
In the short time they have been open for business, the response has been extremely positive. The first day was really busy compared to what we expected, McArdle said, and business has been steady since.
