The performance is scheduled to take place from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the society's Burt Barn Gallery.
Wilson will use her powerful contralto to her advantage, ranging from a whisper to a fervent spiritual to capture the spirits of Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, and two invented characters she calls the Slave Woman and the African Queen.
Although these historical reflections are the stories of black women with remarkable experiences, Wilson believes they could be about any woman striving to make a better life for herself, her family and her community.
Wilson strives to tell their stories with strength, dignity, and pride, from Harriet Tubman guiding slaves through the Underground Railroad to freedom after escaping slavery herself, Sojourner Truth campaigning for abolition and women’s rights, and Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her bus seat to a white passenger, launching the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s.
"These are historical figures I'm portraying, but anybody who comes to see the show can find something in their own history," says Wilson. "Everyone has a unique journey."
A Minneapolis native, Wilson started acting at The Minneapolis Children’s Theater, continuing her career in Minnesota after studying at Howard University.
A member of Norwalk’s Theater Artist’s Workshop, SAG and AFTRA, Wilson has been performing “A Journey...” since 2010.
There will be a catered lunch included. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
