Stephen Gurman spent 20 days in the intensive care at Norwalk Hospital after the fall on June 27. He is now undergoing rehabilitation at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, N.Y. A GoFundMe account has been established for Gurman to cover rehabilitation expenses not covered by insurances, outfitting the family home to accommodate Gurman’s disabilities and other medical and personal necessities. Gurman, a financial adviser, and his wife, Ellen, have three college-age children, Joanna, Brett and Matt. Brett is a member of the diving team at Tufts University, and Jo competes for the nationally ranked University of Virginia. Matt graduated from Weston High School in June, where he was a standout on the boys basketball team.

Stephen tumbled down a staircase when he went to turn off a downstairs light on the evening of June 27, according to information on the GoFundMe page. The family waited for three days before they were assured Gurman would survive the fall.

He spent four days in a coma, suffered several skull fractures and two setbacks due to infection while in intensive care. He has made strides at Phelps, and can carry a conversation and walk lightly. His speech, short-term memory and impulse control are still weak.

As of Wednesday, the three-day GoFundMe drive had accumulated more than $22,000 in contributions with a goal of $25,000.
