The team had won titles as fifth-, sixth- and seventh-graders but came up against an undefeated Norwalk team with some of the best players in the state.
Adia Burrows, Syd Cummings and Alex Greer shut down Norwalk's inside game in the first quarter, but their outside shooters picked up the slack. Wilton's Sophia Strazza hit a three at the buzzer to cut the lead to 12-5 at the end of the quarter
Wilton came out on fire in the second, taking a 13-12 lead on the back of an 8-0 run. Kaitlin Reif, Bridgette Wall and Strazza led the offensive attack, helped by Caty Greer's hustle rebounding.
Norwalk would close the half on a 9-2 run of their own to go into halftime up 21-15, and their powerhouse inside game took over the third quarter. Hannah Belanger, Maddie Burke and Caroline Coffey kept Wilton in the game with their defensive play.
With the game still in the balance as the fourth quarter started, Olivia Dexter, Burrows, Cummings and Strazza made a valiant effort to rally Wilton. However, Norwalk won by 11, ending a successful era of Wilton youth girls basketball.
