“We had several nominations for the Distinguished Citizen Awards this year, and it was a difficult choice for the committee to select two winners," said Bob McDowell, CEO of the Riverbrook Regional YMCA. "Both Karen and Bruce have made significant contributions to improving the quality of life in Wilton and are eminently deserving of this honor."
Birck and Hampson co-chaired the $20 million renovation of the Wilton High School science classrooms and Little Theater in 2010. The project was completed during the 10-week summer vacation on time and under budget.
Hampson's extensive volunteer work includes the rebuilding of the Comstock Community Center Building. He was also chair and a founding member of the Wilton Energy Commission. He received the the Connecticut Climate Change Leadership Award from then-Gov. M. Jodi Rell.
Birck's volunteer work includes serving on Wilton's Board of Education, which she chaired from 2006 to 2009; Wilton Energy Commission; and Wilton Go Green. She served as treasurer and president of the Encore Club of Wilton and is currently involved with the League of Women Voters. Birck was also involved with the partial re-roofing capital project at Middlebrook School and the restroom renovation at Middlebrook and Wilton High.
More than 81 individuals, businesses and organizations have received the Distinguished Citizen Award since the Community Celebration started in 1986.
The Distinguished Citizen Award honors volunteers with a long-term history of serving Wilton as volunteers and making a positive difference for the town and its residents. It has been presented to over 81 individuals, businesses and organizations since the Community Celebration began in 1986.
