“From my earliest memory, color has always been my guide and companion in discovery. It has been there silently, an undeniable presence in everything that I see and do,” says Chávez. His works combine powerful social and political elements with a potent esthetic sense. His art spans 40 years and, both physically and metaphorically, it crosses borders, continents and oceans.
He has been immersed in the arts starting from his early years in Mexico, where he was born and attended the prestigious UNAM/Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas at Academia de San Carlos, and INBA's School of Painting and Sculpture at La Esmeralda, in Mexico City.
Chávez’s quest for creative and personal exploration brought him to Connecticut in 1967. Soon after his arrival, he became active in the arts scene, exhibiting his work, performing, and has been a dedicated advocate for artists’ and human rights. Four sitting Hartford mayors, two Connecticut governors and a member of Congress, among others, have publicly honored Chávez’s artistic and humanitarian work.
He serves as chair of the City of Hartford's Commission on Cultural Affairs. A muralist and a visual artist of international acclaim, his paintings and murals are on permanent display at cultural, educational and social institutions and in private collections in his native Mexico, the U.S., Greece, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom. He also is an accomplished photographer and musician, both skills self-taught.
The reception is open to the public. The majority of the paintings will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library. The exhibition runs through Monday, April 27.
The Wilton Library hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m. The library is located at 137 Old Ridgefield Road in Wilton Center.
