Wilton Library, Historical Society Team Up On Gilded Age Lectures

WILTON, Conn. -- For the eighth time, the Wilton Historical Society and Wilton Library are partnering to present a scholarly seminar series about a pivotal time in America's history: the end of the 19th century, known as The Gilded Age.

This five-part series examines a changing nation at a critical juncture. It is sponsored by an anonymous donor with individual sponsors for each lecture. The series' hosts are Louise Herot and Greg Chann.

Steve Hudspeth and Max Gabrielson will share moderator duties. Receptions will follow each of the talks. The lecture locations alternate between Wilton Library, 137 Old Ridgefield Road, and the Wilton Historical Society, 224 Danbury Road.

All lectures will run from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The titles, dates and locations are as follows:

  • Lecture 1: Sunday, Jan. 18 at Wilton Library -- "The Gilded Age: A Familiar but Ambiguous Label for a Period of Rapid Change" with Ann Greene, sponsored by Lee Wilson, Wilson Properties.
  • Lecture 2: Sunday, Feb. 8 at Wilton Historical Society -- "A Gilded Life: Mark Twain" with Brent Colley, sponsored by Lila and Buck Griswold.
  • Lecture 3: Sunday, Feb. 22 at Wilton Library -- "Race Relations and Politics in the Gilded Age" with James Goodman, sponsored by Chris and Dan Delmar.
  • Lecture 4: Sunday, March 8 at Wilton Library -- "How the Other Half Lives" with Bonnie Yochelson, sponsored by Elaine Tai-Lauria and Phil Lauria.
  • Lecture 5: Sunday, March 22 at Wilton Historical Society -- "From Civil War to Revolution: The Rapid Industrialization of America and the Challenges We Still Face" with Matthew Warshauer, sponsored by Kathleen and Bill Brennan.
