Wilton, Up for a Rooftop Farm?

WILTON, Conn. – Would you like to have an herb garden hanging on the wall in your kitchen? Wilton landscapers LaurelRock can do that for you.

The idea of having a green roof or wall in a suburban setting seems unlikely, but George Irwin, founder of Green Living Technologies , wants to change that. In a presentation Tuesday at Wilton’s Millstone Farm , Irwin, along with Burt DeMarche of LaurelRock, explained how Irwin’s roofs and walls could work in the suburbs.

“Green is a buzz word now,” Irwin said, and he thinks that his “vertical farming” will be what takes hold in suburban areas like Wilton. “Our society wants to know where our food is coming from.”

DeMarche's company is the only licensed one in Connecticut able to install Irwins technologies – every employee goes through a training process to learn how to install and maintain them.

“The interest in green roofs is starting to pick up,” DeMarche said. “But there is a lack of understanding and awareness.”

In terms of his own home and garden, Wilton resident Jonathan Brown said the walls and roofs don’t really fit his property vision, but he can see how the concept is important to sustainability.

“Concepts like this speak to the survival of the Earth. It’s not just a choice of putting a plant in the ground or a plant in a vertical wall. It goes beyond that,” Brown said.
