Arrest Of Catholic School Dean Tops Wilton's Week In News

WILTON, Conn. – The arrest of a prestigious Manhattan Catholic high school dean on a drug charge topped headlines in Wilton this past week. Here's a look at this and other top stories from the week:

? Darien resident Nicholas deSpoelberch, dean of students at Regis High School in Manhattan, was arrested in Wilton and charged with possession of heroin , police announced Tuesday. deSpoelberch is due in court on July 22.

? A pregnant Westport woman and two-time Olympics  runner from Ethiopia collapsed and died Monday in Hamden, but doctors at Yale-New Haven Hospital were able to save her baby.

? Residents were encouraged to conserve energy and keep cool as a weeklong heat wave baked the town and the region. High temperatures and humidity combined to make it feel hotter than 100 degrees on many days.

? Janeen Leppert, executive director of the Wilton Chamber of Commerce, was one of this year’s recipients of the Fairfield County Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 awards , the chamber announced Wednesday.

? With prices at the pump jumping nearly 20 cents nationally in the past week, drivers in Wilton and across the state are now facing some of the nation's highest gas prices . The average in the state is $4.01 per regular gallon, compared with the national average of $3.70, according to AAA.

? A Wilton insurance broker was arrested Monday  in cionnection with the theft of more than $12,000 from one of his clients.
