The bear was seen and photographed in the area of Davis Hill Road and North Street recently, police said on their Facebook page Tuesday. Residents who spot the bear in their neighborhood are advised to call 911 immediately, so Department of Energy and Environmental Protection crews can pick up the animal and relocate it to a different area.

Residential area black bear sightings have also been reported in Westport and Danbury in the last few weeks. In the incident in Danbury, the animal was tranquilized and transported to a nature preserve in another part of the state.

Black bears normally avoid humans but will approach residential areas if they see a source of food. If you see one, the Connecticut DEEP recommends you “enjoy it from a distance,” slowly back away and call the authorities. Do not attempt to feed or approach the animal.
