WILTON, Conn. A total of 15 units was damaged Sunday by a fire at Wilton Crest.
According to Wilton Fire Chief Paul Milositz, the fire started in a building at the center of a grouping, making it difficult for the firefighters to access.
We eventually had to put up a ladder truck to use the large-diameter hose that comes with the ladder truck to spray from above to help extinguish the blaze, Milositz said.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Milositz said he expects there to be a longer investigation with the Wilton Fire Marshal and the Connecticut State Fire Marshals office. Milositz said the amount of structural damage has not yet been determined, however, resident Todd Mitchell said the roof on his unit had collapsed at around 12:30 p.m.
Milositz said the blaze, which was fought by trucks and engines from seven fire departments, caused no major injuries.
There is an automatic compact with surrounding towns for aid, Milositz said, so when the dispatch went out, other departments were notified. We had asked for additional units when we arrived on scene and saw the magnitude of the fire.
The Norwalk Fire Department sent a truck and engine with eight firefighters to the scene when the call came in at 11:05 a.m. Milositz said it took about an hour and a half for around 60 combined firefighters to tame the fire.
Two firefighters were injured while trying to control the fire. One, a New Canaan firefighter, was sent to the hospital for minor injuries to the back of his neck after part of a ceiling fell on him, Rob Hitter, of Wilton EMS said. Milositz said a second was injured, but was treated on site.
