GREENWICH, Conn. -- Fireworks came early for Nancy Catalano of Greenwich, who purchased a Powerball “Quick Pick” ticket for the July 2 drawing and won the game’s $1 million prize.

“I went to the lottery’s website with my ticket to look up the winning numbers. I started circling each number that matched until I had five circles — I couldn’t believe it,” Catalano said in a statement.

The winning Powerball numbers on July 2 were 8 -18 - 45 - 53 - 58 and the Powerball number was 35.  Catalano’s ticket matched all five of the winning numbers, but missed the Powerball number.

In total, 7,542 winning Powerball tickets were sold statewide for that date with prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million.

Catalano, who turned 76 the week after winning the prize, received a prize check at CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill for $683,000, the value after taxes.

“Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I’d win a million dollars. I’m really not that lucky,” said Catalano.

Since the new Powerball game began on Jan. 15, 2012, Connecticut has sold 20 prize winning tickets each worth $1 million, plus another seven tickets that were “Power Played” for the game’s $2 million prize.

Catalano’s winning ticket was purchased at Putnam Shell, at 401 W. Putnam Ave. in Greenwich.  A lottery retailer since 1986, Putnam Shell has sold many prize winning tickets over the years, including a Mega Millions “Quick Pick” ticket for the March 30, 2012 drawing worth $250,000.

“We’ve known Mrs. Catalano and her family for many, many years,” said Putnam Shell owners, Carmen and Judy Moretti. “We’re really so happy for her that she won. It was great news.”

Putnam Shell will also receive a check from the CT Lottery — a $2,500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Wouldn't it be nice to see a poor person win to help them survive instead of a rich person adding icing to their cake.

So, yet another winner with a Quick Pick. Very many big lottery winners say that they got their win by using a quick pick. Maybe there's nothing really to it, but quick picks definitely do seem to be more lucky. To try and take advantage of this, I've made up a little free and just-for-fun page which generates your own personal quick pick numbers. Who knows, it might work - you just never know your luck! As I say, it is free and just a bit of fun, so look out for VillaLibra Lucky Numbers if you want to see if you can locate it for yourself.
