Letter: Wilton Teens, Want to Vote?

WILTON, Conn. - The following is a letter from the Wilton registrars of voters on registering teens to vote.

Do you know a high school student who’ll be turning 18 before Election Day on Nov. 6, 2012? Wilton’s Registrars of Voters Tina Gardner and Carole Young-Kleinfeld report that, under state law, those students are eligible to register to vote if they are U.S. citizens, and will turn 18 on or before Election Day .

This eligibility allows 17-year-old students to vote in the April 24 and Aug. 14 primary elections, as long as they turn 18 by Nov. 6.

With help from the Wilton League of Women Voters, Wilton’s registrars will supervise a two-day voter registration drive during lunch at the Wilton High School cafeteria on March 27 and 28. With proper identification, such as a driver’s license or a Social Security card, students may submit Connecticut voter registration applications on that day.

Republican Registrar Tina Gardner said the student voter registration drive usually adds at least 75 new voters to Wilton’s voter list. Democratic Registrar Carole Young-Kleinfeld added, “Young people have a critical voice to lend to the decisions that will affect their lives.”

The registrars will also have information available about absentee voting for students who will be out of town at college or otherwise unable to get to the polls on Election Day.
