WILTON, Conn. – Long lines proved to be somewhat problematic for the Wilton Service Center on Thursday.
Business at the gas station off Route 7 was nearly nonstop as customers bought fuel for cars and generators following Hurricane Sandy.
Station owner Michael Bara wondered, however, how much more gas he could pump before running out. The station’s last delivery was Wednesday morning, and he expected to run out before the afternoon was over.
To add to the problem, he received word that difficulties at a distribution center in New Haven might slow down or stop his next delivery. Only regular gas was left, as plus and premium fuel was all sold out Thursday.
“There’s nothing I can do,” Bara said, noting that the shop never lost power after Hurricane Sandy.
Mary Pat Sexton of Ridgefield didn’t take any chances, fueling up at Wilton Service after having seen some stations out of gas, and knowing that much of Ridgefield was still without power. “We have to be as good to the (gas trucks) as we are to the tree trucks,” she said. “We need it."
At the Wheels convenience store farther north on Route 7, manager Chris Hoff said he had no problems with gas.
“We’ve had full self-service all week,” Hoff said. “We’ve been doing about 50 percent more business than normal ... and we’ve made a lot of new friends.”
