Mark B. Nickel, 39, Wilton Athlete

WILTON, Conn. — Mark B. Nickel, 39, of Wilton and Naples, Fla., died June 20 after a long struggle with the serious disease of alcohol addiction. Nickel was born June 7, 1972, at Norwalk Hospital, the son of Albert and Margery Nickel of Wilton.

Nickel graduated from Wilton High School with the Class of 1991. He was an avid sportsman, known for his participation in lacrosse, football and swimming. As a youth, he held many swimming records at the Wilton YMCA and the Shore and Country Club. He was ranked in New England for youth tennis and was a member of state champion soccer teams.

As a freshman in high school, Mark was a kicker for the varsity football team. Throughout high school, he was also member of the reigning FCIAC and state championship lacrosse teams.

He attended John Hopkins University, where he was a member of the lacrosse team. Nickel's passion for sports encompassed golf, tennis, lacrosse, skiing, biking and kayaking.

Nickel will be remembered most for his sense of humor, kindness of heart and selfless nature.

He is survived by his parents as well as his sisters, Grace and Olivia Nickel.

A tribute celebration of his life will be held at Our Lady of Fatima, 229 Danbury Road, Wilton, on Saturday, June 25, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Wilton. For online condolences and directions, visit www.hoytfuneralhome.com.
