GREENWICH, Conn. – Repairs are continuing at the switch control house in Greenwich after a fire destroyed equipment that controls signals and switches on New Haven Line trains on May 10, Metro-North said in a statement last week.

An emergency, locally controlled manual panel, which will restore limited switching, was installed and tested on Friday, May 23. It is currently operating and allows three of the four tracks to be available for AM Peak and PM Peak trains through the area in Cos Cob.

There is still limited ability for trains to switch tracks should operational problems arise. Work will still need to be done manually in the field if operational problems happen, which may take up to 30 minutes to complete and cause delays.

The damage from the fire is causing delays of five to 10 minutes on all trains traveling through the Cos Cob area indefinitely until repairs are complete.

Rescue locomotives are on standby if any trains become disabled.

Metro-North is rebuilding the damaged control house using equipment from another location, and is working to implement this work by the end of the year.

Typical replacement time for a control house is at least 18 months or longer due to the long process of design, installation and testing.
