Curry, 58, joined NBC News in 1990. Her most recognized role came on the "Today" show, where she sat in the news anchor chair from 1997 to 2011. That was the second-longest tenure in that seat, behind only Frank Blair.

Her career at NBC began to unravel, however, when she took over as co-host for Meredith Vieira in 2011. She tearfully left the position in 2012, amid rumblings she was forced out by co-host Matt Lauer. Since then, Curry has been the anchor at large and reporting for other NBC News shows.

Curry's departure from "Today" sparked viewer backlash, and America's former No. 1 morning news show has fallen behind its competitors in ratings.

Curry said she will begin a new relationship with NBCUniversal to develop a media startup to provide reporting and content to be distributed over multiple platforms. It allows her to report on any network, including NBC News.
