Old Blighted House Demolished In Bridgeport To Make Way For New Home

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Normally destruction doesn’t bring cheers and accolades, but that was not the case Wednesday morning when a blighted property on Clifford Place in Bridgeport was torn down.

This blighted property on Clifton Place was demolished Wednesday to make way for a future home for a family with a special needs child.

The abandoned home was demolished to pave the way for a new home, which will be built by Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County. City officials expect the new home, to be built by Habitat volunteers and the home's new owners, to be ready for occupancy by next fall.

Chris Rosario, director of the city’s Anti-Blight and Illegal Dumping Department, described the partnership with Habitat for Humanity as a victory for neighbors and for a family who will get a new home.

“The mayor has been very committed to working with neighbors and Neighborhood Revitalization Zones to turn problems into triumphs. This is only one example,” said Rosario. “Habitat for Humanity and the city are helping a family become homeowners who can attest that Bridgeport is getting better every day.”

Rosario, who is a newly elected state representative, was referencing the city’s new marketing campaign, “Bridgeport, Getting Better Every Day.”

The Clifton Place dwelling, which has been vacant for years, is in Bridgeport’s North End neighborhood. Neighborhood Revitalization Zones are set up in each of the Park City’s neighborhoods to devise action plans to improve the community.

Neighbor David Katz said that he at one point had considered buying the property. “But then we heard Habitat was building a house, and we were thrilled. This is the last piece of the puzzle,” Katz said.

Habitat for Humanity has already selected the family who will occupy the new home. Rosario said one family member is a disabled child.

“Habitat has been a great partner with the city,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “Together, we have helped change the lives of kids and families and changed neighborhoods, one house and one block at a time. We are using vacant lots and dilapidated properties, transforming them into new homes with proud homeowners and good neighbors.”
