Figures released last Tuesday from the American Community Survey show that on average, Fairfield County residents who commute to New York City travel an average of 104 minutes, and 60 miles, to their jobs. The time and distance makes Fairfield County one of the Top 10 “mega-commuter flows” in the country.
The Census Bureau defines a mega-commute as a one-way trip of at least 90 minutes and at least 50 miles. Nearly 600,000 full-time workers throughout the country have mega-commutes, according to the bureau.
Nationwide, the average one-way commute is 25.5 minutes.
About 8 percent of working Americans have commutes of 60 minutes or longer and about 4 percent of people work from home, the bureau reports.
The data also shows that a majority of all commuters, over 79 percent, drive to work alone. Only about 10 percent of all commuters car-pool and about 5 percent use public transportation.
Of commuters who travel 60 minutes or more, 61 percent drive alone, 23 percent use public transportation and 12 percent car-pool.
