Romney Donations Outstrip Obama in Wilton

WILTON, Conn. – More of Wilton’s donation dollars have gone to presidential hopeful Republican Mitt Romney than any other candidate.

Of the $62,053 donated by 66 Wilton residents, $32,250 was donated to Romney since January 2011, more than the $25,400 President Barack Obama earned from Wilton donations, according to the website OpenSecrets.org .

The monetary support given to Romney is typical of the area, Wilton Republican Town Committee Chairman Al Alper said. He said because of the high number of people in the area involved in the financial services industry, more people are going to agree with Romney’s position than any other candidate.

“The financial center wants someone who won’t strangle them,” Alper said. “That’s why I think there is such a wide margin that Romney has over Obama and the Democrats and even the other Republican candidates.”

When it comes to local fundraising, the closest any of the candidates will get is probably New Canaan, where Romney recently visited, Alper said. If any of the candidates tried to visit all 196 communities in Connecticut, Alper said he would doubt their ability to govern properly.

“While we like to think Wilton is the center of the universe, the reality is that we’re just one voice in a cacophony of voices in the Republican Party,” Alper said when asked if he thought any of the Republican candidates would do a fund-raiser in town.

Alper has high hopes for the April 24 primary and for the chances of the Republican Party in November.

But, “whomever becomes the Republican nominee should plan on being outspent by the Obama campaign machine,” Alper said.
