Uncontested Races, Beer Sales Fill Wilton Ballot

WILTON, Conn. – It's a mostly uncontested ballot this year in Wilton, with only one question to pull voters to the polling stations.

Democratic Selectman Ted Hoffstatter said races, especially for first selectman, should never be uncontested – even if you like the candidate.

“I think that — even if the first selectman is doing a really good job – and I do think Bill is doing a good job – it’s healthier to have choices,” said Hoffstatter, who is running for re-election, as is First Selectman Bill Brennan.

It is better for the democratic process to have the choices, he said. That way the elected officials know they were chosen rather than “simply having it handed to them.”

But voters will have a choice when it comes to the ballot question: Should beer be sold in grocery stores?

Mark Sheehan wrote on the Daily Wilton’s Facebook page that no, he doesn’t want beer to be sold in grocery stores.

“Availability in three new liquor stores is enough — and you'd be eroding the revenue base of those three new stores. Wilton needs to help its existing retailers stay in business and this could be enough to make the three new wine stores lose money and eventually close. Want more closed stores in this town? No,” Sheehan said.

The question will probably pass because the “majority of the people don’t have a problem” with selling beer in grocery stores, Hoffstatter said. He said it seemed a “common sense thing.”

But the question is, if the races are uncontested and there is only a single question to be answered, will Wilton residents go out to vote? On our Facebook poll, the top answer was yes, that you would go vote.

The polling stations will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Polling places are located at:

• District 1 - Wilton High School David Clune Center for the Arts

• District 2 - Driscoll School Gym

• District 3 - Middlebrook School Gym
