The Westport native won a Tony Award for Best Original Score for "Dear Evan Hansen," a Broadway show about an isolated and anxious teenager longing to be seen.
The award was announced Sunday, June 11 at Radio City Music Hall where CBS broadcast the Tony Awards, billed as "Broadway's Biggest Night."
Paul shares the award with his writing partner Benj Pasek. Earlier this year, the two won an Oscar for Best Original Song for "City of Stars" from "La La Land."
This was the two's first Tony nominations -- and wins. The two gushed about all the people -- family, cast and former theater teachers -- for helping them with their success. "We always hoped to write a show where people looking for a home would find one," said Paul.
"Dear Evan Hansen" beat out “Come From Away," "Groundhog Day The Musical,” and “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” to win the Best Original Score. The musical has a total of nine nominations.
