Wilton Looks to Cut Budget by Nearly $200,000

WILTON, Conn. — A cut of nearly $200,000 was requested in the Board of Selectmen's budget Tuesday night.

During discussions of the mill rate, the Board of Finance voted 5-1 to cut the increase in the selectmen's budget down from 2.71 percent over last year to 1.75 percent. That is the figure the Board of Finance requested at the start of budget negotiations.

First Selectman Bill Brennan asked where the $200,000 would be made, although he said he was willing to work within the 1.75 percent increase.

"We’re going to have to make some cuts," Brennan said. "I don’t know where we’re going to find them."

The selectmen's budget isn't the only one getting slashed. The Board of Education was told to cut its budget down to the 1.75 percent increase, too, a difference of about $180,000.

As it currently stands, the proposed selectmen's budget is $30.6 million, and the cuts would bring it down to about $30.4 million.
